FENSA requires that rooms on upper floors have fire escape windows, provided they’re not fitted at a height greater than 4.5 metres. A fire escape window has to be capable of creating a clear space that’s 0.3m². If made to the right size, French windows fulfil these criteria and are considered valid by FENSA.
